World wetlands day 2020
World Wetlands Day 2020
Saturday, February 1st
Join the Celebration of World Wetlands Day – February 1!
Why celebrate wetlands? Wetlands in our community and throughout the world provide vital habitat for a great diversity of plant and animal communities. Without wetlands, many species cannot survive including a number of birds, reptiles, and amphibian species that can be found here in northeast Indiana.
To celebrate, partners throughout Allen County are hosting events to showcase why wetlands are an important habitat in our community. Partners include Little River Wetlands Project, ACRES Land Trust, Allen County Parks, Allen County Partnership for Water Quality, Allen County Public Library, City of Fort Wayne, the Environmental Resources Center at Purdue Fort Wayne, and the Northeast Chapter of the Indiana Native Plant Society. Look forward to hikes, open houses, presentations, and a wetland seed propagation class. All events will be throughout Allen County, so there will be an event near you!
World Wetlands Day is organized by the Ramsar Convention that started in 1972 and whose mission is “the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world” (www.ramsar.org).
Help LRWP celebrate with our local and global partners the importance of wetlands and the vital role these habitats play in protecting our biodiversity.
