Eagle Marsh is a 705 acre wetland preserve located
near Fort Wayne, Indiana. By the summer of 2009, up
to ten miles of trails will allow hikers to access Eagle
Marsh’s shallow water wetlands, sedge meadow,
prairies, 30-acre mature forest and newly planted trees
and shrubs. Over 150 bird species and numerous other
wild creatures have been seen at Eagle Marsh, among
them twelve bird and two amphibian species
endangered or of special concern in Indiana.
With the adjacent Fox Island County Park and other
privately owned natural properties, Eagle Marsh
creates almost two square miles of habitat for birds
and other wildlife.
A beautiful one-and-a-half mile loop trail at Arrowhead
Marsh, accessible except during wet times of year,
meanders through 97 acres of native tallgrass prairie,
ephemeral ponds, and mature woods. Wander this trail
in spring, summer and fall to see grassland birds, a
profusion of ducks and other water birds, and wild
creatures such as chipmunks, foxes, and deer. In
winter, walk or snowshoe the path, stopping to observe
animal tracks and the wildlife that make them.
Arrowhead Prairie (91 acres) is located near
Arrowhead Marsh. It is protected for wildlife only, but is
occasionally open for stewardship and other special
events. Arrowhead Prairie’s grassland habitats are a
haven for birds and butterflies.
